Program Officers
Program Officers—also called program staff—are NCCAM's resident scientists who develop and manage research portfolios that advance the Center's mission. Program Officers work in the Division of Extramural Research and Training.
Program Officers have many responsibilities, including:
- Interact with the extramural research community to assess research needs and opportunities, and develop research initiatives to solicit research in topical areas. See RFAs, PAs, and RFPs at the following site: nccam.nih.gov/cgi-bin/grants/funding.pl
- Provide potential applicants and applicants with feedback on responsiveness of proposals to NCCAM priorities and to published initiatives (or funding opportunity announcements/FOAs)
- Administer scientific portfolios of grants, cooperative agreements and contracts by:
- Providing applicants with feedback on review of applications and providing related advice on application submissions and resubmissions
- Working with applicants, awardees, and peer review, grants management and other NIH staff to ensure efficient operation of the extramural awards process.
A Program Officer may also oversee cooperative agreements and specific research contracts, ensuring that Federal funds are spent appropriately. In the case of cooperative agreements, the Program Officer may participate more actively in the research. For contracts, the Program Officer oversees scientific performance.
