After 16 days of being shut down because of a lapse in appropriations, the NIH is back and open for business. We are operating under a continuing resolution through January 15, 2014, and will begin to reestablish dates for grant and contract submissions, determine how to handle missed grant application review meetings, and reschedule dates for training and other activities that were cancelled.  I encourage you to keep abreast of updates by reading Dr. Sally Rockey's extramural research blog and by checking the NIH Guide for Grants and Contracts for notices over the next week.

During the shutdown, the media clearly communicated the vital importance of life-saving medical research conducted by NIH. As staff returned yesterday, NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins sent a welcome back message noting:

The visibility of our mission—to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and the application of that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability—has never been greater.

At NCCAM, we are proud of our dedicated intramural and extramural researchers who contribute toward this NIH mission. Thank you for your patience and flexibility during this challenging time.
