Twitter Chat on Alzheimer's Disease and Complementary Health Approaches

December 18, 2013 - 4:00p.m. ET to 5:00p.m. ET

Event Description

According to the National Institute on Aging (NIA), as many as 5 million Americans over age 65 have Alzheimer’s disease. While some dietary supplements have been marketed with claims that they enhance memory or improve brain function and health, research is ongoing to determine whether certain dietary supplements have any effect on the progression of cognitive decline or Alzheimer’s disease. We’re co-hosting a Twitter chat with NIA to discuss what the science says about several dietary supplements that have been studied for cognitive function, dementia, and Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, we’ll also discuss some of the research that’s looking at mind and body practices such as music therapy and mental imagery, which have shown promise in treating some symptoms related to dementia, as well as for alleviating stress among caregivers.

We’ll be joined by NCCAM experts Drs. D. Lee Alekel, Partap Khalsa, and Richard Nahin and NIA experts Drs. Laurie Ryan and Nina Silverberg.

We’ll be tweeting from @NCCAM and NIA will be tweeting from @Alzheimers_NIH.
