What is NCCAM?

| 1991 October | The U.S. Congress provides NIH funds to establish the OAM (P.L.102-170) |
| 1993 June | The NIH Revitalization Act of 1993 (P.L.103-43) formally establishes the OAM |
| 1998 October | NCCAM is established by Congress under Title VI, Section 601 of the Omnibus Appropriations Act of 1999 (P.L. 105-277) |
| 1999 October | Dr. Stephen E. Straus is appointed the first Director of NCCAM |
| 2000 September | NCCAM's first strategic plan is published |
| 2005 February | NCCAM publishes its second strategic plan |
| 2008 January | Dr. Josephine P. Briggs is named second Director of NCCAM |

Division of Extramural Activities
Office of Scientific Review
- Coordinate review of application assigned to NCCAM review groups.
- Intermediary between the applicant and reviewers.
- Prepares summary statements for all applications reviewed by NCCAM.
Office of Grants Management
- Evaluate grant applications for administrative content and compliance with statutes, regulations, and guidelines.
- Provide consultations and technical assistances to grantees.
- Issues grants and administers them after award.
Division of Extramural Research
Program Staff:
- Develop and oversee NCCAM-funded research and research training programs.
- Provide guidance regarding NCCAM research interests and priorities, and funding mechanisms and opportunities.
Office of International Health Research
- Serves as a resource for information on international CAM research policies and activities.
- Facilitates establishment of international research collaborations and research training programs.
Office of Special Populations
Focal point of NCCAM's activities to contribute to the elimination of
racial and ethnic health disparities.
Office of Clinical and Regulatory Affairs
- Reviews and monitors NCCAM-funded trials.
- Serves as a resource for NCCAM's clinical investigators.
- Helps to ensure the safety of clinical trials.
- Oversees the NCCAM Data Safety Monitoring Board.
- Ensures compliance with Institutional Review Board and U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations.
