Centers of Excellence for Big Data Computing in the Biomedical Sciences (U54)

NCCAM Funding Opportunity Announcement: RFA-HG-13-009

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is pleased to announce the release of a new funding opportunity announcement (FOA) request for applications (RFA) for Centers of Excellence for Big Data Computing in the Biomedical Sciences RFA‐HG-13‐009.

The Centers of Excellence for Big Data Computing in the Biomedical Sciences is a trans-agency initiative that includes all areas of biomedical science including those associated with integrative health care.  The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) strongly encourages investigators at institutions studying integrative health care to consider the overarching goals of this initiative and respond with innovative solutions to big data problems associated with integrative health care.

Biomedical research is becoming more data-intensive as researchers are generating and using increasingly large, complex, and diverse data sets. This era of “Big Data” underscores the need of biomedical researchers to locate, analyze, and interact with these data (and more generally all biomedical data) and associated software.  This FOA addresses difficulties that arise due to the lack of tools, accessibility, and training.

In response to these new challenges in biomedical research, proposals for the creation of Centers of Excellence are sought to conduct research to advance the science and utility of Big Data in the context of biomedical and behavioral research, and to create innovative new approaches, methods, software, tools, and related resources. These Centers will advance the ability of the biomedical research enterprise to utilize Big Data by producing tools and resources from early-stage development to full maturation with the expectation that these tools and resources will be broadly useful to the research community.

NCCAM believes that solutions for handling and manipulating Big Data are imperative to the advancement of cutting-edge integrative health care research.  Please contact John Williamson at williamsonjs@mail.nih.gov to discuss areas of interest associated with integrative health care consistent with the mission and goals outlined in NCCAM’s Third Strategic Plan
