Postdoctoral Research Position, Section of Sensory Cells and Circuits, NCCAM Intramural Pain Program

Imaging Somatosensory Cells and Circuits

A postdoctoral research position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Alex Chesler in the Section of Sensory Cells and Circuits in the Intramural Pain program, National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) at the National Institutes of Health.

Our research utilizes genetically altered mice as a model system to understand how noxious stimuli are encoded and the changes that occur after injury and inflammation. We are currently looking for a postdoctoral fellow to join our group who will assist our efforts to

  1. study the pharmacology of nociceptive sensory neurons,
  2. trace and manipulate neural circuits with viral vectors, and
  3. monitor neuronal activity in vivo with genetically encoded calcium sensors.

The candidate must hold a Ph.D. (0–3 years) in a relevant research field by the time of appointment. Strong candidates will have demonstrated expertise in any of the following: electrophysiology, calcium imaging, and/or anatomical tracing. Applicants with experience with multi-photon microscopy and/or in vivo imaging/recording will be given preference.  Other desired skills include a working knowledge of Matlab, Metamorph, and/or pClamp.

Additional requirements include strong laboratory, analytical, and organizational skills; strong verbal and written communication skills in English; and the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team. Appointments and salary are commensurate with research experience and based on NIH guidelines.

Located on the NIH Bethesda campus within one of the most active neuroscience communities in the world (, the position offers exceptional opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with a diverse group of investigators with a wide range of interests. The laboratory is housed in the Porter Neuroscience Research Center, with new state-of-the-art biomedical research facilities.
